Are you interested in the
outdoors, camping, and orienteering?
Are you fascinated by first aid, survival skills and
knots?
Do leadership skills, helping others and community
draw you in?
I recommend Boy Scouts of America
for anyone with not only these interests, but in
reality any at all. You will find over 110 Merit Badges
to choose from, which pinpoint any interest ranging
from Genealogy to Environmental Science,
from Sculpture to Art, from Fingerprinting
to First Aid, and plenty of other common
interests to go around--Camping, Woodwork, Hiking, merit badges have it all.
The fact that merit badges cover so
many interests is why I think Boy Scouts is for everyone,
not just people into roughing it. Anyone who seeks
to learn some excellent leadership skills, independence,
productivity, and helping out. Not
only does it feel rewarding when you earn a
requirement, but with the many leadership positions,
yet dynamic responsibilities, you will learn skills
that will last you a lifetime. Whether it be a
résumé for college, a job, or anything else,
the Boy Scouts has a reputation for determination,
commitment, and hard work, all of
which are important values to have.
Troop 89, a well-organized, dynamic
troop, strives for one camping trip a month,
including one fun week at Camp
Squanto every year, where campers earn
merit badges, play sports, swim, and fight in a
vicious battle of War Canoes!! Other trips include a
fascinating Purgatory Chasm campout, biking in
Martha's Vineyard, skiing at Mt. Abram, and many
more. For recruitment purposes (for potential
scouts) and advancement purposes (for current
scouts) we host a Webelos
Weekend annually at Dover Cabin.
If you are an aspiring scout, I
implore you attend Webelos
Weekend. It is an excellent sample of the fun
we have and the variety of activities we do.
Be there for the enchanting campfire with skits.
More than 60
Eagles have benefited from Troop 89, since it
was founded in 1959. For more information, see General
Info. This website, just one of
many communication pathways, is operated by a scout. This essay was written by a scout as well. In
fact, the entire troop is a boy-run
troop--giving the scouts many more
opportunities to learn, develop and teach leadership
skills.
For all of the values described here
and developed in so many places and ways, I highly
recommend that you join Boy Scout Troop 89. If you
are reluctant now, try it out--what can you
lose? Wait until you have some years under your
belt, and you will be amazed as you
watch, through the eyes of an experienced scout,
what you endured just some time ago, as you strived
to carry on and "Do your best" to
endure hardships, cross obstacles, and develop many
skills on the way. Look on from the watchful eyes of
an Eagle, helping and teaching whenever needed,
prepared to fight any challenge, determined and
committed.
Go on--try something new. Join a
community where you can get involved, gain some
experience, and so much more. The
potential is already in you, begging to come out.
Scouting is best for you.
