Greenhorn Trip

Camp Massasoit

March 31 – April 2,  2006

TRIP INFORMATION AND EQUIPMENT LIST

The Greenhorn Trip is primarily dedicated to training our new scouts on the basics of Troop 89 outdoor camping, but it will provide an opportunity for other members of the troop to work on their own outdoor advancement requirements as well.

All new scouts and their parents are invited to attend. First year scouts will leave the scout shed (behind the Legion hall in Medfield) at 8:15am Saturday. Mr. Thuma will meet you at the shed so you can all caravan down to Massasoit together.  We would encourage car-pooling if possible.  All other scouts will leave Friday at 7:00pm. There are no cabins, so the entire troop will sleep in tents.

Message on being prepared:

Being prepared is your responsibility and you should make sure YOU PACK all of the suggested equipment/clothes for the trip.  Please make sure to bring this newsletter and equipment list on the trip.  We will do a quick inspection prior to departure to make sure everyone has the necessary equipment.  Results of the inspection will count toward the Camping Excellence Award for this trip.

Other Essentials:

a)       Parental approval form must be on file.

b)     Activity fee is $15, due March 3/23

Weather and Preparation:

We should expect that the weather will be cold.  Remember what you have learned about cold weather camping:  dress in layers, remove sweaty or wet clothing prior to bedding down, bring changes of dry, warm clothes, cover exposed skin, and if you get cold, take immediate corrective action. Be prepared for wet and cold weather. I have attached a checklist to provide guidance on what to bring.

I am looking forward to scouting with you all. If you have any questions, please call me or any of the troop leaders.
