2004 GREENHORN TRIP

CAMP MASSASOIT, PLYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS

April 2,3,4, 2004

TRIP INFORMATION AND EQUIPMENT LIST

This year's Greenhorn adventure will take place at the Camp Massasoit Scout Reservation in Plymouth.  Here is a little history on Camp Massasoit:  In 1924, when the original Old Colony Council searched southeastern Massachusetts for locations to establish a summer camping facility, the site at Elbow Pond in southern Plymouth was highly considered.  However, the council chose the region around neighboring Morey’s Hole pond and Hio Hill; this property became Camp Child - named after Medfield resident Harrison H. Child - and, between 1959 and 1990, was the Summer Camp home of Troop 89.  A few years after Camp Child was incorporated, the Quincy Council selected the Elbow Pond site and established Camp Massasoit.  The Quincy Council eventually became the Boston Minuteman Council, and it is this council that will be our host this weekend.

The Greenhorn Trip is primarily dedicated to training our new scouts the basics on Troop 89 outdoor camping, but it will provide an opportunity for other members of the troop to work on their own outdoor advancement requirements as well.  This year, the archery range will be available to the troop on Saturday. All new scouts and their parents are invited to attend. We will depart in two groups this year. First year scouts will leave the scout shed at the legion at 9:30 AM Saturday. All other scouts will leave the night before, 7:00PM. There are no cabins, so the entire troop will sleep in tents or, if they choose, under the stars.  The troop will provide tents for all adults attending, so please adivse if an adult would rather bring their own tent. Cooking will be by patrols.

Cost is $15/attendee, due March 18.

We will assemble at the scout shed behind the legion at 7:00 PM on Friday.  Please eat dinner before you leave Friday as there will be no stops en route.  We will return there by 11:30AM Sunday. Upon our return, there will be 15 to 30 minutes of “equipment management” to be accomplished by the scouts. This is required to insure Troop 89 continues to have available well maintained and yet affordable equipment.  If all of our scouts accept your share of “equipment management” responsibility, the task will go fast, and we should be ready to leave by 12:00.  Please remind your parents that you need to finish the “equipment management” effort.

Departure:  New Scouts: Saturday, April 3, 9:30 AM  Scout Shed, Legion Hall

All others: Friday, April 2, 7:00PM, Scout Shed, Legion Hall

Pick Up: Sunday, April 4, 12:00PM, Scout Shed, Legion Hall

Weather and Preparation:

The weather is a huge variable this time of year. While we hope for warm and dry weather, the good scout is always prepared.  Be prepared for wet and cold weather. We will be in tents and the temperatures have been known to get below freezing at night.  I have attached a checklist to provide guidance on what to bring.

Any questions, please call Mr Gilliland 359-XXXX.
