1999 WEBELOS WEEKEND
CAMP SAYRE / BLUE HILLS RESERVATION, MASSACHUSETTS
13-14 NOVEMBER 1999
TRIP INFORMATION AND EQUIPMENT LIST

This year's WEBELOS weekend should closely follow the traditional WEBELOS weekend format, except this year we will be camping at a different site. Troop 89 Scouts will arrive at Camp Sayre early Saturday morning. Later in the morning, the WEBELOS from Medfield Packs 113 and 200 will arrive, and we will host them to a campfire hot dog roast lunch at Camp Sayre and then on a hike through the nearby Blue Hills Reservation. The main purpose of this trip is twofold: the WEBELOS will earn an important requirement for their Arrow of Light award by attending a Boy Scout weekend activity, and Troop 89 will have the opportunity to introduce the graduating Cub Scouts to a typical Troop 89 outing. Hopefully, this trip will help recruit some of these future Boy Scouts into Troop 89 next March. Shortly after the hike, the WEBELOS will head home, while Troop 89 Scouts remain overnight. Scouts will leave Camp Sayre for the Scouthouse late Sunday morning.
This marks the sixth year that Troop 89 has scheduled its WEBELOS weekend at Camp Sayre with a hike through the Blue Hills. Many of our younger Scouts will remember their own WEBELOS weekend experience, while other Scouts hold hiking experience from past trips like Mount Monadnock and the August Hike. As with all such hikes, hiking boots, a weatherproof jacket, a canteen or water bottle, a small first aid kit, and a small knapsack are the more important items to bring along on the hike. Cold weather camping is usually the rule in November, so Scouts should be prepared to keep warm overnight. Although we will be camping near a cabin this year, the Scouts will still sleep in tents. If Scouts are planning to work on advancement requirements over the weekend, they should be sure to bring their handbook and any special equipment they may need.
transportation to and from the camp is the parents' responsibility. We are asking that Troop 89 scouts arrive at the Camp Sayre parking lot at 7:00 AM SATURDAY MORNING, 13 November 1999. The WEBELOS and their parents will be arriving at the camp at around 10:00 AM Saturday morning, 13 November 1999, and will leave at around 4:00 PM later that afternoon. Parents of TROOP 89 scouts should plan to pick-up their sON(s) at the camp SAYRE parking lot AT 11:00 AM SUNDAY MORNING, 14 November 1999. Parents and scouts will then proceed directly to the Scouthouse to unload the troop and patrol equipment, before returning home. Some Scouts may be arriving and departing at other times; all such Scouts should inform Mr. McGowan of what their plans are, beforehand. Directions to Camp Sayre are listed on the opposite side.
With the exception of Saturday lunch, which will be provided by the troop, all meals will be planned and prepared by the individual patrols. There will not be any breakfast served Saturday morning; Scouts should have breakfast before leaving for the camp. Tents and other troop gear will be delivered to the campsite by the troop. As usual, all troop equipment will be returned directly to the Scouthouse; any required equipment cleaning and/or drying will take place there immediately after the trip.
In previous years it has been somewhat chilly during the day (it snowed two years ago) and well below freezing at night. While it may be mild this year, expect it to be cool during the hike, colder as it gets dark (which is early now), and frigid overnight. Scouts may choose to wear shorts and a T-shirt during the hike - temperatures permitting - but should plan to bring warmer clothes along with them. It can be windy and a good deal colder at the top of the hill. Adequate raingear is required if the weather dictates it. Remember, you will have great difficulty keeping warm if you are wet. Hiking boots are essential; sneakers will not be permitted on the hike. A canteen or water bottle and a very small first aid kit are also necessary for the hike. Once again, bring your Scout Handbook and whatever other tools you will need (compass, jackknife, etc.) if you wish to work on advancement requirements.
