Camp Squanto 07
By Matt D.
In my opinion, this year at Camp Squanto stood out from the rest. Many actives took place in one week such as: Theme Night (the theme was medieval), Apache Relay, the chili cookout, the OA tap out, among other activities. Tuesday night, all the scouts and staff at the camp dressed as if they were in medieval times! We had a medieval feast and built our own catapults (we used it against the staff!). In the chili cookout, we won the award of most original chili. In the OA tap out we select a few scouts that stand out among others to join the OA (Order of the Arrow), which is a secretive organization of the Boy scouts.
Wednesday, All the troops in the camp participate in a “race” where the scouts partake in an event with a baton; once they complete an assigned activity they pass the baton off to the next person for their activity. The activities can be a short walk away, or a long run away. Each scout somehow helps in the relay, and some activities require 2 people. Once the baton is passed to the last person, he runs to ring the camp bell, signaling the completion for that troop. Even if one troop has rang the bell, the other troops still continue. Our troop came in 1st place this year. Our troop has not won the last five years, and for the last four years we came in second place! Even though all of our scouts helped win, a few scouts shined in particular. Alex Rock learned how to tie a knot behind his back in 5 minutes; he ended up tying the knot in 4 seconds!! Also, Ashford Burgess devoured a pie in a few seconds, even though he was sick, and he led our troop for the win!
