Good Deed on the Sportsman's Club Trip
By Matt D.
On the morning of Saturday, May 20, Troop 89 gathered at the Scout Shed for a trip to the Sportsman's Club. After some organization, the troop began to hike. Once hiking a considerable amount, we found ourselves at the Sportsman's Club. We immediately set up our tents, and later in the day had much fun shooting rifles and other guns. The club served us a great lunch on Saturday and a scrumptious breakfast on Sunday. As we were walking home, however, a turn of events led to a good turn.
This story is about the BSA's slogan "do a good turn daily." It shows what scouts should do almost every day. Some don't really know what it means, and the following story will tell you what it means to do a good turn daily.
It was a beauiful Sunday morning and Troop 89 was hiking back from the Sportsman's Club, after eating a big breakfast. As we were hiking along Causeway Street, we saw a car pass by that had a flat tire. Some of the scouts may have been laughing at the driver except it was anything but funny. After some encouraging from the adult leaders, one of the scouts asked the occupants of the car (a mother and two daughters) if we could help. She agreed and the scouts needed two boys and an adult to stay behind and help with the tire. The scouts were feeling bad for this lady, especially because she was going to church. After that thought, two raised their hands to volunteer. An adult stayed behind to help as they watched the troop march away into the distance. The car had a spare tire which took them a little while to get off. After they got the tire on, the lady thanked them and drove back to church. The three walked to the scout shed without taking breaks (the rest of the troop took about 4 more). Eventually they made it back to the shed and met up with the rest of the troop.
This story shows you are willing to do things for others that only benefits them, not you.
