Norwich University Trip
By Kevin S.
On September 28, 2001 twenty of Troop 89 scouts were dismissed from their classes and immediately reported to the parking lot to head to Norwich University in Vermont for the annual Boy Scout Camporee. It was a long, tiring drive up to Norwich University in Vermont but as soon as we got there our assigned freshmen leaders helped us unload and setup. We setup our tents in awkward positions because we were squeezed into our little designated spot.
When we finished setting up our tents and put our personal gear in our tents we learned a few new marches from the Rooks (freshman). When we were finally finished learning about the fun activities and things planned for this weekend. We got snug into our sleeping bag for a long cold night.
We got up the next morning at 5:00 am to start what they call PT also known as Personal Training. We first had to do some motivational exercises that consisted of Flutter Kicks, Push-ups, and other exercises. Then we went for a morning run around the whole 3 football fields and periodically during them we "Grabbed some real-estate" which also means push ups. PT was fun for most of us and some didn't like it. We then had delicious breakfasts thanks to Mr. Wilde and Mr. Short and all the other helpers. We went to the activity lot and waited there for a good 55 minutes and then started the obstacle coarse. It consisted of jumping over a log, over a six foot wall, over other logs without using your hands. We used a rope and swung our bodies over the logs. Yup! The parents did it too.We went back to plan our skit and to eat lunch.
And then off to Activities. They started it out with a cool demonstration of the rescue squad at Norwich and then we went to all the different activities. The activities consisted of looking at snipers and going inside a really army truck. Then off to the competitions, which consisted of different activities that we had to compete against. Some were as followed: Going through a spider web without having any part of our body touch the strings, a scavenger hunt where we had to find different things in the woods, and finally, a three-legged race. There were many, many others too.
Then to dinner and then to opening ceremonies with the skits and I have to say, ours was the best. We had ice cream and socialized. The lights were out at 10:30 or 11:00. Morning came before we knew it. We packed up and loaded the trailer for another long journey home.
